Bosch, Hieronymus1450–1516Dutch painter. I n his paintings Hieronymus Bosch, of Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, created a highly original world with a moral message. Bosch used his works, often based on Christian writings, to present his views on human sin and its consequences. He also produced some very fine landscapes.Christ Carrying the Cross is an oil on panel painting by Hieronymus Bosch, executed most likely c. 1490-1500. Jheronimus van Aken, better known as Jheronimus Bosch, belonged to a family of painters spanning six generations; his earliest artistic forebears came to Nijmegen (Duchy of Guelders) from Aachen -if, as is presumed, “Aken” was their original Hieronymus Bosch was an early Flemish painter known for his inventive and surreal religious-themed paintings. One of his most famous works, The Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1490–1510), consists of a triptych depicting both Eden and hell populated with uniquely imaginative monsters and scenes of torture.
