My 24-70 2.8 S for the Z7 arrived Thursday at my local store YM Camera in Youngstown Ohio. Nikon hit it out of the park with this one. The focus is unbelievably fast and the images are tack sharp throughout the the zoom range. At F2.8 indoors low light the corners and edges perfect. Outdoors it preforms perfectly.
Bottom Line. The Nikon 24 120mm is indeed the cauliflower of lenses. It’s not flashy and it doesn’t have legions of devoted, rowdy fans. While the Nikon 24 120mm isn’t the flagship Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. But it’s a solid lens that provides versatility, quality and performance at a great value.
Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM – $2,198. Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM – $1,999. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED – $1,697. Tokina AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 Pro FX – $937. It’s less than half the cost of each of the three current models, and only a little over half the cost of the previous Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G. Of course, DXOMark scores don’t tell you

The two Sigma 24-70mm Art lenses I tried were not great performers. Focus was a bit hit and miss, and images were unacceptably soft. The Nikon 24-70 VR I settled on, is very, very good. Karl Huber's gear list: Sony RX100 Nikon 1 V1 Olympus PEN E-P5 Nikon D850 Nikon Z7 +26 more.

The Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is $2400. The Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8, which I’m reviewing today, is $1200. That’s literally half the price, and it begs an important question: why? Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8. The first clue is that the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 is not an S-line lens.

Of course, I do own a light DX setup like others have mentioned for when I get lazy. But no, by too heavy, there are no balance issues or anything. The 24-70mm f/2.8 VR is a great lens! When I had a D750, my 24-70mm remained fixed on it 95% of the time. 24-70mm is a excellent focal length for many functions.

Let’s see how both compare wide open (Left: 28-300mm, Right: 18-200mm): The 18-200mm is clearly superior at 28mm f/4.0 than 28-300mm at f/3.5 in the center. Stopping down 28-300mm to f/4.0 improves sharpness and by f/5.6 both lenses perform equally well, with a slightly better performance by the 28-300: Above from left to rigth: Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8E VR on FTZ adapter, Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 VR S, Nikon Z 24-200mm f4.0-6.3 VR. Alternatives. Currently the Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 VR S is the only 70-200mm lens available in Z-mount. So the alternatives all have to be used via Nikon’s FTZ adapter adding 30.5mm in length and 133g in weight:

The 24-70 is 2.9x zoom ratio. The 14-24, only 1.7x. If you compare the Nikon to other lenses of the same focal length, you'll see it is much better than you give it credit for. semaphore's gear list: Nikon D850 Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED Nikon 85mm F1.8G Nikon 35mm F1.8G ED Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F4G ED VR.

The 17-55mm f/2.8 weighs a ton and costs $1,500. I'd skip it. I suggest the 18-55 or 18-200 VR first depending on your budget. This 18-70 would be my third choice and dead last would be the heavy 17-55 2.8. My biggest beef with this 18-70 is the weird camming of the zoom.

Thom's Mini Review: The 24-70mm seems long in the tooth these days. No VR is the usual complaint, but Nikon's more recent zooms—even the more consumer-oriented ones—sometimes
